About Pulse Translations

When subtitling is (truly) a labour of love.

For Valérie and Valentine, subtitling is a given, shared from the very first lines they translated. One had discovered the field by chance during an internship and fallen in love with it; the other had made it the subject of her dissertation.

Pulse Translations was born of this shared passion. At the beginning, there was our core business: French, English and Dutch subtitling. Over time, the team has grown to include a multilingual pool of specialist translators, covering a wide range of formats: voiceovers, surtitling (supertitling), video games, advertising…

Always with the same conviction: every piece of work deserves the care of a skilled craftsperson, and a passion for choosing just the right word.

Translation,
or the subtle art of compromise

“For us, good subtitling is subtitling that goes unnoticed. We’re the only ones who know the full extent of the hidden effort behind it.” – Valentine De Luca
Because, in reality, translation is the work of a master craftsperson, and it requires patience and thought. And a keen sense of compromise.

To go unnoticed by the viewer, countless choices go into the meticulous review of every subtitle.

Subtitling means finding the word that will make a line sound right, adapting a Belgian joke made in Flemish so that it works in France, respecting the rhythm of a dialogue, reworking a play on words, and finding the appropriate level of language for a period film, as well as for a suburban drama.

It means deciding what information to keep when not everything will fit on screen (or when five characters are all speaking at the same time), omitting the right word at the right moment, and making every sentence fluent and natural.

In short, it is very much the art of compromise… but not when it comes to quality! On that front, we never make any concession.

Our philosophy and our values

“Putting ourselves into another world, that’s our job. Diving into a story, working with the image, uncovering the director’s intent... We learn every day, and it’s something we never tire of.” – Valérie De Heyn
Before translating, we take the time to understand the intent of the director, the rhythm of the scenes and the world of the film. Our goal: for the viewer to always experience the same emotion, whatever their language.
We honour our commitments while remaining flexible in the face of unforeseen circumstances. When requirements change, we do everything in our power to find practical, realistic solutions and to maintain a calm working environment.
Our daily routine is driven by decisions. Choosing what matters when not everything can fit on screen, adjusting dialogue to the exact frame, cutting reluctantly… but never at the expense of quality!
Whether it’s a 30-second teaser or a 10-episode series, we devote the same energy, meticulousness and care to every project entrusted to us.
We communicate, we advise, we find solutions. Our clients know they can rely on us to move a project forward, even in the face of unforeseen circumstances – always within the limits of what’s feasible, of course!
